Check List for Death, Succession and Estate Planning:
- Establish an 'Enduring power of attorney'.
- Establish a list of people to be contacted.
- Advise on the location of the necessary documentation established.
- Are your Estate affairs in order?
- What will you do in case of a death in your family?
- Do you have a will?
- Does anyone know where you keep the will?
- Is your will tax effective?
- Have you read your will lately?
- Is it still what you want? Maybe you have changed your mind, or maybe the circumstances have changed.
- Have you worked out how much is needed to provide for the survivors? The poorer the will preparation the more the tax man will take.
- Do you know that a change in marital status of the testator (that's you) cancels the old will?
- Are there any changes in your children's status?
- Do you receive government pensions?
- Other close relations?
- Assets purchased or sold?
- Do you have children from different marriages?
- Do you have step children?
- Who is you estate planner?
- Who owns your business?
- You - as a sole trader.
- You - in a partnership.
- You - in a company or a trust.
- Is your current debt covered by a life insurance policy or a mortgage loan policy?
- Does your will have a testamentary trust where the trustee has a power of appropriation?
- Where do you keep the address book of the people you want to be contacted?
- How do you want to be put to rest?
The above points are serious matters to consider when you make a
will.
They can mean that your beneficiaries receive exactly what you want them
to receive with a minimum of worries.
If you cannot answer confidently and
positively any of the above questions, then your affairs are not in
order.
